SAKADO, Saitama -- A woman too busy with reading her mobile phone e-mail made easy pickings for a robber who came up behind her, whacked her head with a shovel and stole her handbag before fleeing, police said Saturday.
The 20-year-old university student victim sustained minor head injuries in the attack and was robbed of her handbag and the 2,000 yen in cash that she was carrying with it.
Her assailant remains on the loose, though the shovel he used to hit her with has been retrieved just meters away from where the woman was attacked.
Police said the woman was walking along a sidewalk and intent on reading an e-mail that had been sent to her mobile phone. She did not notice what else was going on.
The man came up from behind her and smashed her head with the shovel. She fell to the ground and he picked up her bag and ran away. The woman did not get a good sight of the mugger and nobody else reported seeing the Friday incident.
