The Joint Expeditionary Digital Information System (JEDI) demonstration
is designed to exploit
commercial Mobile Satellite Services (MSS), such as GlobalStar and ORBCOMM to
collect and disseminate a battlefield Common Operational Picture (COP) for
soldiers and vehicles in the battle area.
Within the JEDI soldier system, the individual warfighter will have
lightweight hand-held communications devices that will send and receive the
following:
Blue and Red force tracking information
Early warning of key events on the battlefield
Calls for fire
Routine message traffic
Graphic display of the COP
Beyond line of sight communications
All of this accomplished with
hand-held data communications devices integrated into a load bearing vest that
is worn as part of the individual soldiers load bearing equipment (LBE).The
four devices that make up the JEDI system are the GlobalStar handset. Viper
Binoculars, NINO Palmtop and the Rockwell Precision Lightweight GPS Receiver."
